Schizophrenia (SCZD) is a chronic and severe mental disorder affecting more than 21 million people worldwide. Treatment with medicines and psychosocial support is effective. However, more than 50% of people with Schizophrenia (PwSCZD) are not receiving appropriate care. Four forms of coercion interventions are usually used for handling SCZD crisis; seclusion; mechanical restraint; physical restraint; involuntary medication/chemical restraint.
According to the existing policies, regulations and trends, the use of coercive measures is being reduced at mental health settings (both at hospital and residential levels). However, what happens when it comes to domiciliary environments?
The “Zero Corecion” project (full title: “Training Program for Handling Schizophrenia Crisis in Domiciliary Environments through the Use of Strategies Alternative to Coercion”) is launched with the main objective of increasing the competences (attitudes, knowledge, skills) of PwSCZD, their relatives and Mental Health professionals (MPH), in order to handle Schizophrenia Crisis in domiciliary environments through the use of strategies alternative to coercion.
The project aims at:
- Raising awareness on rights and trust on reducing coercion
- Transferring available existing strategies for handling SZCD crisis without coercive practices and their application to domiciliary environments
- Promoting self-management and cooperation among PwSCZD, relatives and MHP
- Training PwSCZD and relatives as peer supports
This partnership is implemented with the participation of seven agencies from six different countries. Specifically:
- Fundación C.V. Santos Andrés, Santiago y Miguel (Spain - coordinator)
- SENT - Slovensko zdruzenje za dusevno zdravje (Slovenia)
